Beihang University has a long-standing tradition in the field of integrated circuits, which can be traced back to the introduction of semiconductor-related courses in 1960. Starting from 1977, the University successively offered courses such as Integrated Circuits and Systems: Analysis and Design, Principles of Large-Scale Integrated Circuit Technology, and Specialized Integrated Circuit Design. In 1988, Beihang became the first institution in China to offer education and practical training in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The EDA Laboratory was established in 1992. In 2003, Beihang University was granted the authortity to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of "Electronic Science and Technology" and established two national engineering research centers and four provincial and ministerial  key laboratories/centers. In 2005, based on the discipline of "Microelectronics and Solid State Electronics," Beihang launched a national talent cultivation base for integrated circuits. This was further recognized as the first national demonstration School of Microelectronics in 2015. In April 2018, Beihang’s Microelectronics School officially commenced its operations. In October 2020, it became the first institution in China to be renamed as the School of Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering,  comprising the Department of Integrated Circuit Materials and Devices, the Department of Integrated Circuit Design and Tools, and the Department of Integrated Circuit Process and Equipment. In December 2020, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council approved the establishment of the first-level discipline of "Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering." On October 26, 2021, Beihang University was officially approved as one of the first 18 institutions in China to offer the first-level discipline of "Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering."

The School currently has a total of 124 faculty members, namely 29 in the Department of Integrated Circuit Design and Tools, 35 in the Department of Integrated Circuit Materials and Devices, 51 in the Department of Integrated Circuit Process and Equipment, and 9 administrative staff. There are 45 doctoral supervisors, including 16 adjunct supervisors.

A total of over 3,000 square meters are dedicated to offices and laboratories , with equipment and instruments valued at over 200 million RMB. This includes various micro and nanofabrication devices such as an 8-inch ultra-high vacuum magnetron sputtering equipment and an ion beam etching instrument with endpoint detection. Comprehensive testing platforms for electrical, magnetic, and optical properties can also be found here. These state-of-the-art facilities provide excellent conditions for the development of integrated circuit disciplines, talent cultivation, and scientific research at Beihang University.

A distinctive talent cultivation system in integrated circuits has been established, featuring "ideological and political guidance, interdisciplinary integration, in-depth industry-university integration, and international dual-degree programs." For undergraduate students, the School has set three goals of fabricating a micro-nano device, verifying a digital chip, and taping out an analog chip, aimed at cultivating a group of top-notch talents in the field of integrated circuits. In addition, the School offers a "Physics-Microelectronics" dual bachelor's degree program based on the Top-notch Talent Cultivation Plan in Basic Disciplines, to further promote the interdisciplinary and comprehensive talent development. In 2022, the "Microelectronics Science and Engineering" discipline for undergraduates was approved as a national first-class program. At the graduate level, conduct training for the entire integrated circuit industry chain from the directions of process, equipment, materials, devices, design, tools, etc., to cultivate outstanding integrated circuit engineers and industry leaders adhering to the "four orientations" and leading the development of the times.

Moreover, through strengthened international cooperation, the School is committed to enhancing students' global competence and the international influence of the discipline of Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering. In 2016, the School's "Ultra-Low Power Spintronics Storage and Computing Innovation and Intellect Recruitment  Base" was approved as  Intellect Recruitment Base (111 Program) by the Ministry of Education. In the same year, it was also approved as the National base for International Science and Technology Cooperation for Spin Electronics by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The School has signed agreements on Double Degree in PhD with Paris-Saclay University and University of Lorraine, Eindhoven University of Technology, and KU Leuven. It has also signed a cooperation agreement with the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Over the past four years, a series of original research results have consistently been achieved, with 11 articles published in top-tier journals such as Nature and Science Portfolio journals, 5 in the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM), and more than 10 highly cited papers in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI). The School was awarded the first and second prizes of Natural Science Award of the Chinese Institute of Electronics and the second prize of Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Materials Research Society.
